A $450,000 medical malpractice trial verdict in which a Suffolk County jury found that the defendant urologist departed from accepted practice in failing to properly repair the plaintiff’s vesicovaginal fistula (an abnormal connection between the bladder and the vagina). The plaintiff previously settled against the defendant’s gynecologist who injured the bladder during a prior procedure, which led to the formation of the fistula. The jury found that the defendant urologist’s failure to utilize proper surgical technique to repair the fistula caused the fistula to develop again, requiring yet another surgical repair. Until the final surgery was performed, the plaintiff would experience urinary leakage from her vagina.
